AutoCompete
AutoCompete is one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" ideas. Imagine Family Feud except the answers are fed by the billions of queries users make via Google everyday. A viral smash hit on the web (With views in the tens of millions and even featured on late night shows!), AutoCompete has also now become a game show in the UK. The goal was to port the core experience to mobile and add multiplayer to the featureset.
Project Responsibilities Engineering & Publishing AutoCompete just kind of fell into my lap. Via a mutual friend Justin reached out to me to see if anyone I knew could handle porting his viral hit web game to iOS and Android. I was eager to tackle a mobile project and had just wrapped up work at WEVR, so I offered to take on the work myself. This was my first gig where I didn't assume any Game or Visual Design responsibilities and worked only to recognize Justin's wireframes. This was also the first time I'd programmed a non-real time multiplayer game. Using Amazon's NoSQL DB and the Facebook API we were able to bring a lightweight, responsive and simple multiplayer experience to players for the first time in AutoCompete's history. Additionally, the game features support for remote updates of the question and answer set (i.e., no patching required!) and IAP. This was also my first time releasing on iOS and Android platforms. Despite some hair-tearing moments we had a day and date release on both platforms. The lesson I pulled from the project is that while I enjoy the challenges of engineering and like to grow my skill set, my heart is really in the design and UX experience. Taking a backseat was not my favorite way to work. To date the app has been downloaded almost 40,000 times from the AppStore and 15,000 on Android.
